A spectrophotometric method for the determination of serum magnesium using Magon, 1-azo-2-hydroxy-3- (2,4-dimethylcarboxanilido) naphthalene- 1- (2-hydroxybenzene), is presented. The serum is prepared by a nitric-perchloric acid digestion. Interfering phosphate is removed as aluminum phosphate. The colored complex is developed at pH 11.2 in an alcoholic medium and read at 505 mµ.
