Tris (hydroxymethyl) Aminomethane as a Standard for Kjeldahl Nitrogen Analysis

Solutions of tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane (Tris) have been shown to be a convenient primary standard for the Kjeldahl analysis. This compound is readily available in analytical reagent grade and has all the desirable properties of a primary standard. It is unnecessary to protect the Tris solution from C02, as any reaction between Tris and this gas cannot be detected by the titrimetric procedures involved.
