Simultaneous Direct Estimation by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry of Copper and Zinc in Serum, Urine, and Cerebrospinal Fluid

S. Meret 1 and R. I. Henkin 1

1 Section on Neuroendocrinology, Experimental Therapeutics Branch, National Heart and Lung Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md. 20014.

A method is described for simultaneously estimating copper and zinc in serum, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Standards are prepared in 150 millimolar NaCl solution, and subsequently standards and samples are diluted with n-butanol:water (6:94, by vol). Both ions may be simultaneously determined in as little as 0.5 ml. The procedure is simple, quick, reliable and reproducible.

Key Words: trace-metal determination • colorimetric methods compared • trace-metals in body fluids
