1 Department of Physiological Chemistry, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio 43210.

The lipids extracted by toluene in toluene-preserved urine were collected and characterized by thin-layer and gas-liquid chromatography. The lipids extracted by toluene and the lipids in human lipoproteins are similar. In addition, an emulsion of urine and toluene was obtained; the native emulsifying agent was analytically characterized.

Key Words: toluene as extracting solvent • phospholipids • gas-liquid chromatography • thin-layer chromatography
