Automated Method for Screening Urine for Amphetamine and Some Related Primary Amines

E. R. Rutter 1

1 Home Office Central Research Establishment, Aldermaston, Nr. Reading, Berks, England.

This paper describes an automated method for extracting and detecting amphetamine and some related primary amines in urine. In the technique the color reaction given by primary amines with 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid is used, and is sufficiently sensitive to detect the excretion of therapeutic doses of amphetamine. Samples of 4 ml of urine may be analyzed at a rate of 20 samples per hour, and the method is suitable for inclusion in a multi-channel drug-screening system.
