Rapid Method for Screening for Galactosemia and Galactokinase Deficiency by Measuring Galactose in Whole Blood Spotted on Paper

André Grenier 1 and Claude Laberge 1

1 From the Division of Human Genetics, Centre Hospitalier de l’Université Laval, Québec-10, Québec, Canada.

An inexpensive automated fluorometric technique for blood galactose determination has been modified to use dried blood spots available through phenylketonuria screening programs. The method is more efficient because of its high capacity (sime85,000 tests a year), low cost (sime$3,000 a year in reagents), and high specificity (enzymatic method).

Key Words: AutoAnalyzer • mass screening • disorders of galactose metabolism • fluorometry
