John F. Pickup 1, Malcolm J. Jackson 1, E. Margaret Price 1, and Stanley S. Brown 1

1 Division of Clinical Chemistry, Medical Research Council, Clinical Research Centre, Harrow, Middlesex HA1 3UJ England.

The Reference Method [Clin. Chem. 19, 1208 (1973)] for determination of calcium in serum has been critically assessed, both to evaluate its performance in one laboratory and to identify ambiguities and errors in the published texts. Within-run and between-run precision and bias have been estimated, and a revised protocol is presented.
