Fluorometric Determination of Propoxyphene

James C. Valentour 1, Joseph R. Monforte 1, and Irving Sunshine 1

1 Coroner's Office, County of Cuyahoga, 2121 Adelbert Rd., Cleveland, Ohio 44106; and the Department of Pathology, School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio 44106.

We report a sensitive fluorometric method of analysis of propoxyphene in biological materials. 4-Chloro-7-nitrobenzo-2,1,3-oxadiazole is reacted with propoxyphene to produce highly fluorescent derivatives, thus enabling quantitative determination of propoxyphene in whole blood, urine, or tissue after either therapeutic use or overdose.
