The predominant fluorescent porphyrin that appears in erythrocytes as a result of chronic lead absorption or iron deficiency anemia is zinc protoporphyrin. This compound can be fluorometrically assayed in diluted whole blood with high sensitivity. An extremely simple and rapid test for lead absorption is described that is based on this assay. Results of a field trial indicate that this test should be seriously considered as a primary screening test for monitoring the effects of chronic lead absorption.
