Using commercially available bilirubin preparations, calibration curves for the van den Bergh reaction were obtained that differed significantly from many previously reported, The bilirubin preparations used were not considered the cause. Rather the indicator properties of azobilirubin and the instability of bilirubin pigment in conventionally employed solvents appear to account for the differences noted.
