RI values of organic iodine compounds which interfere with the determination of serum protein-bound iodine (PBI) and butanol-extractable iodine (BEI) levels were obtained for the solvent system 2-butanol-4% NH4OH (3:1) utilizing descending paper chromatography. The feasibility of employing this system for identification of exogenous organic iodine in patients' sera was investigated. In general, the demonstration of these compounds or their metabolites was achieved only in sera obtained shortly after administration. This was due mainly to sensitivity limitations in the detection of the compounds on paper. Some data on the duration of interference with the PBI and BEI were also obtained for the radiopaque dyes Telepaque, Hypaque, Salipix, and Orabilex.
