Y.M. Dennis Lo currently is Associate Professor of Chemical Pathology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Honorary Consultant Chemical Pathologist at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong. Dr. Lo received his BA degree from the University of Cambridge; he then pursued his clinical studies at the University of Oxford, where he obtained his BMBCh degree. Following his medical training, Dr. Lo continued in Oxford, where he received his DPhil degree in pathology. Dr. Lo then undertook his postgraduate medical training in internal medicine and chemical pathology at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and is on the specialist register in Chemical Pathology in the UK.

During his postgraduate medical training, Dr. Lo's research was supported initially by a Wellcome Medical Graduate Fellowship, and then by a Junior Research Fellowship from Hertford College, Oxford, and a Wellcome Career Development Fellowship. Following his fellowships, he was appointed University Lecturer in Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Oxford and Honorary Consultant Chemical Pathologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital. Dr. Lo was a fellow at Green College, Oxford. In 1997, Dr. Lo returned to Hong Kong, where he has taken his current position.

Dr. Lo has published >70 papers, abstracts, reviews, and book chapters, predominantly on aspects of molecular medicine. He has a long-standing interest in the physiology and clinical applications of the fetomaternal trafficking of nucleated cells, an area that currently is being intensely researched because of its implications for the development of noninvasive prenatal diagnosis. Recently, Dr. Lo demonstrated that in addition to fetal cells, cell-free fetal DNA also circulates in maternal blood during pregnancy; Dr. Lo's group is currently working on elucidating the physiology and diagnostic implications of this phenomenon.
