Doping in Sport Symposium |
Editorial Advisor: Larry D. Bowers
The XVI International Congress of Clinical Chemistry was held in London, the week before the opening of the Olympic Games in Atlanta. The control of doping in sport is a global issue and hence it was particularly germane to link such work with this important congress. Currently, 25 International Olympic Committee-accredited laboratories are dedicated to drug analysis. This facet of pharmaceutical toxicology demands that such laboratories must be at the forefront of technological advances to maintain their "gold standard" approach and that the analysis be relevant to the drugs currently being administered. Also, documenting the social and medical consequences of the misuse of performance-enhancing compounds is important if sport is to rid itself of the specter of doping. The papers presented herein by eminent speakers reflect important aspects of this interesting area.
