This latest edition of Hemostasis and Thrombosis includes new developments in basic coagulation as well as platelet physiology, vessel wall function, and antithrombotic therapy. One-half of the chapters are either new or have been extensively rewritten since the last edition. Five editors involved in hemostasis and thrombosis, oncology, vascular medicine, and vascular surgery were in charge of the organization of the book, and many expert authors have contributed to its writing. This text is intended for students, scientists, and physicians who deal with the increasing complexity of hemostasis and thrombosis in laboratory investigations as well as in clinical practice.

Part I (Basic Principles) covers plasma factors and inhibitors (19 chapters), platelets (14 chapters), and vessel wall (14 chapters). Part II (Clinical Practice) consists of hemorrhagic diseases (17 chapters) and thrombotic disorders (15 chapters), dealing with basic concepts and inherited and acquired pathologies. It concludes with 12 chapters on antithrombotic therapy.

The first section on blood coagulation factors and inhibitors contains an interesting new chapter on the genetic principles underlying disorders of pro- and anticoagulant proteins. The platelet section approaches all aspects of thrombocyte structure, function, secretion, and signal transduction. It is completed by new chapters on the GPIb-IX-V complex, the eicosanoids, and the role of platelets and leukocytes in coagulation. Vessel wall structure and function are treated in two sections with new chapters on platelet-vessel wall interactions in flowing blood, vascular adaptation to altered blood flow and response to injury, and the atherosclerotic process. One minor criticism: the portions on vessel wall are divided in two sections, a division that seems artificial because all of the topics could have been organized in one comprehensive section.

Part II has new chapters on von Willebrand disease, antiphospholipid syndrome, and fibrinolysis and includes acquired and inherited bleeding and thrombotic disorders. Hemorrhagic and thrombotic complications of anticoagulant treatment and its practical aspects are approached, as are the new antithrombotic drugs.

Hemostasis and Thrombosis comprehensively reviews the physiology and biochemistry of hemostasis and the pathophysiology of thrombosis as well as the diagnosis and treatment of bleeding and thrombotic disorders. It is a useful, well-illustrated, up-to-date reference. For both young scientists and advanced readers, for biologists and clinicians, this book contains almost all you need to know from a theoretical as well as a practical point of view.
